According to a research study conducted recently by the Academy of General Dentistry, thirst-quenching sports & energy drinks and store-bought lemonades are as much as ten times more damaging to your tooth enamel as sodas like Coca Cola. KMX & Red Bull energy drinks and Snapple lemonades were among the worst offenders, so keep this in mind as you’re drinking lots of fluids to beat this August heat.

The best choices for your enamel? Quench your thirst with iced teas and, of course, lots of water and non-carbonated, unsweetened beverages. Stay cool, hydrated and healthy!

What do candy and battery acid have in common?

Who knew the pH of some candies – especially sour, fruity candies – could have higher acidity content than battery acid? A study recently conducted by the Utah Dental Association (UDA Action, 2009), found the pH level of candies like Skittles, Airheads, Sour Gummy Bears, Sweetarts and Sprees to have as much as three times the pH value of battery acid! These and other similar sour, fruity candies held a pH value of 2.5-3.0 as compared to the pH level of battery acid being the equivalent of 1.0. The pH value at which teeth decalcify and begin to decay? 4.0!

Think about that before you reach for a quick, sweet treat to pop in your child’s lunch box. Although small, they pack a powerful punch!
